Kendrick’s GeekGuides # 1: how to mod a flash drive

This is only the first in a series of articles called GeekGuides. These GeekGuides will introduce you non-geeks to everything in the world that are defined as tech and geek. PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE GUIDE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO MOD YOUR FLASH DRIVE.THERE WILL BE IMPORTANT TIPS AND WARNINGS THROUGH OUT THAT MAY MESS YOU UP IF YOU ONLY READ THIS AS YOUR MODDING.  Just about everyone who has a computer has a flash drive. Some people know how to take off the cover and see inside of a flash drive. I know how to remove a flash drive’s cover and put the flash drive in a different cover. In order to do this, you need the following things:  a flash drive with seams on the cover (preferably with no data on it), a new cover to use afterwards, a hot glue gun, and a screwdriver. Finding a cover is important to do first, it isn’t safe to keep a flash drive without a cover for too long.

Let’s decide what our new cover will be. You can use anything that the flash drive can fit into, such as an empty pack of gum or candy, a short bottle from medicine or vitamins, or you could make something out of paper or foil. Make there is a way to make an opening in the front, and to open it up all the way to fit something in. you may need to do this on your own. After you find a cover, you may move on to removing the core of the flash drive.

Removing the cover can be easy or hard; this depends on the flash drive you chose, you may be able to take it off with your fingernail, or you may need a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Now look at your flash drive and find the seam holding the plastic of the cover together, this is what you want to aim for with your screwdriver or fingernail. Once the seal is broken, it should be easy to continue; just pull the screwdriver around the flash drive to break the rest of the seal. The cover should easily pop off (like the top of a jar) to reveal the motherboard of the flash drive. This is what we want; you can do whatever you want with the cover. We are ready now to apply the new cover.

Now, these steps may vary slightly depending on what you chose for your cover, I’ll be describing it as applying it to a gum pack. First you want to open the gum package from the side; you can hot glue this closed later. Then, hot glue the bottom of the flash drive to the bottom of the gum package.
Be sure that the glue doesn’t touch anything that LOOKS important! This could permanently damage your flash drive and you’ll have to start over with a new one.  Once it’s glued in and dried, peel off the top part covering the plug, if you’re clever, you’ll take the top off in a way that allows you to use the paper as a top cover, although this isn’t necessary. Beware that once the hot glue has dried, it’s going to be virtually impossible to remove your new cover, so take care to choose wisely.

Now you have a flash drive that looks cool, everyone will ask you where you got it, and you can proudly wear it around your neck and look awesome and not like your everyday geek. Hope you enjoy your new flash drive! You may want to test it before you take it anywhere though, just to make sure you didn’t damage anything. Thank you for reading, and I hope to make another GeekGuide soon.
